A clean tote and a food-safe tote are not the same thing.
This is the guide we most wish every buyer read. The used-container market is full of honest sellers, careless sellers and a few who will tell you whatever closes the sale, and the difference is invisible on a loading dock. Food grade is a documentation status, not a level of cleanliness — and the most dangerous container you will ever be offered is the one that looks perfect.

Buying food-grade stock?
Tell us the product and whether it is edible, potable or both. Food-grade inventory is finite and allocated in the order it is requested.
Four conditions. Fail one and the answer is no.
| Condition | What it means | How to verify | If it fails |
|---|---|---|---|
| Food-contact resin | The bottle is manufactured from a food-contact compliant HDPE grade | Manufacturer declaration or bottle marking | Not food grade |
| Edible prior contents | The only documented previous cargo was edible or potable | Prior-contents record naming product and shipper | Not food grade, permanently |
| Segregated handling | Stored, moved and washed apart from industrial stock | Seller's segregation statement and yard practice | Cross-contamination risk; treat as industrial |
| Non-wood pallet | Plastic or all-steel base | Visual inspection | Not food grade until the base is swapped |
What qualifies, and what disqualifies permanently.
| Previous cargo | Food grade eligible | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| High-fructose corn syrup, liquid sugar | Yes | Warm wash lifts sugar films readily |
| Fruit juice concentrate and purée | Yes | Permanent colour staining is normal and harmless |
| Vegetable and seed oils | Yes | Needs hot caustic to break the film |
| Vinegar, brines and food acids | Yes | Check gasket compatibility before refilling |
| Food-grade glycerine, propylene glycol | Yes | Confirm the grade on the paperwork |
| Potable water, beverage bases | Yes | Often the cleanest inbound stock available |
| Cosmetic and personal-care bases | Case by case | Depends on the specific formulation |
| Cleaning chemistry, detergents | No | Industrial classification |
| Fertiliser, pesticide, agricultural chemistry | No | Permanently disqualified |
| Any solvent, fuel, oil or coating | No | Permanently disqualified |
| Unknown or undocumented | No | Cannot be assessed; treat as industrial |
Why cleaning does not create food grade
Polyethylene is not an inert barrier. It is a semi-crystalline polymer with amorphous regions that absorb small molecules, and a number of industrial chemistries migrate into that structure and stay there. Washing removes what is on the surface. It does not extract what is in the wall, and it cannot.
Even where absorption is not a concern, the documentation problem remains. Food safety systems depend on traceability, and a container whose history begins with "we cleaned it thoroughly" has no traceability at all. An auditor is not assessing your washing technique; they are assessing whether you can demonstrate what the container held.
Preparing a food-grade tote for first fill
Even documented stock should be cleaned before use. Rinse with potable water. Wash with a food-safe detergent at the recommended concentration, allowing genuine contact time. Rinse twice more with potable water to remove the detergent itself. Sanitise with an approved product at the label concentration and contact time. Air dry with the fill cap off and the outlet open.
Then replace the outlet gasket and the cap seal. Elastomers are the one place residue reliably persists, and they cost a couple of dollars. Full procedure in the cleaning guide.
Record the serial
Finally, record which container carried which batch. If a quality question ever arises, the ability to trace a batch to a specific container with a documented history turns a recall investigation into a five-minute lookup. It costs nothing to write down and it is the single most useful habit in this whole area.
Walk away when you hear
- "It is food grade because it is clean"
- "We are not sure what was in it but it does not smell"
- "All our totes are food grade" — no yard is entirely food grade
- "You can just wash out the chemical"
- "The paperwork is with the previous owner"
- A wood pallet under a container being sold for food service
Food grade, answered
01How can I tell if a tote is food grade just by looking?
02Does a natural or white bottle mean food grade?
03Can an industrial tote be cleaned to food grade?
04What about the pallet?
05Is food grade the same as potable water safe?
06What should I do before the first fill?
A checklist you can take to any supplier.
Print it, work through it, and buy on the answers rather than on the photographs.

| 03 | Can I have that in writing? | Yes, per unit or lot | It is with the previous owner |
| 04 | Is the bottle a food-contact resin? | Manufacturer declaration where published | It looks like it |
| 05 | Where has it been stored? | Dedicated pad, named practice | Vague, or with everything else |

If a seller cannot answer the four questions, we can.
Every food-grade container we supply carries a prior-contents record. Ask for it before you order, not after.
