Section 01

Buying

01How much does a used IBC tote cost?
Price tracks grade, condition, quantity and freight. Rinsed used stock is the cheapest, reconditioned sits in the middle, rebottled and food grade cost more, new costs the most. Because we buy and process our own stock we can price by the pallet or by the truckload rather than from a fixed list.
02What is your minimum order?
One pallet position for pickup at the Cleveland yard, and roughly a partial LTL load for delivery. Freight economics improve sharply above about twenty units.
03Which grade should I buy?
Start from the cargo. Edible or potable means food grade. Regulated means a UN-rated container with a current test. Water, brine and dust suppression run happily on used as-is. Everything else is usually reconditioned.
04Can I mix grades on one order?
Yes, and most customers do — a few food-grade units for one line and a pallet of reconditioned for everything else, on the same truck.
05Do totes come with valves and lids?
Every tote ships with a valve, an outlet cap and a fill lid unless you say otherwise. Gaskets are replaced during reconditioning. Specify a camlock, tri-clamp, NPT or hose outlet and we fit it before it leaves.
06Can I see the stock before buying?
Yes. Visits are by appointment at the Cleveland yard, and we photograph representative units from any lot for customers who cannot travel.
07How long is a quote valid?
Seven days. Used inventory turns constantly and freight rates move, so beyond a week we would rather re-quote than honour a stale number.
08Do you sell to individuals?
Regularly. A large share of our grade B and C stock goes to people building rain tanks, wash bays and garden systems. There is no trade-only rule.
09Can I collect myself?
Yes, and it is the cheapest option within driving distance. Book a slot during yard hours and bring straps.
10How quickly can you deliver?
Within the six-state own-truck radius, typically 48 hours to a week. Nationwide by contract freight, usually one to three weeks depending on the lane and quantity.
Section 02

Selling and collection

01Do you buy used IBC totes?
Every day, in any condition — clean, stained, cracked bottles, bent cages, even bare cages with no bottle. Send count, prior contents and ZIP code for a purchase price.
02What are my totes worth?
It depends on prior contents, bottle and cage condition, how many are in one place and how easy they are to load. Documented food-grade stock is worth the most; unknown contents the least, because they can only go to reclaim.
03Do you buy damaged totes?
Yes. A cracked bottle in a sound cage is genuinely valuable to us because the cage goes into rebottled production.
04What if I do not know what was in them?
We will still take them, but they go to reclaim rather than reuse and the price reflects it. One label or old bill of lading materially changes the number.
05Is there a minimum for collection?
About a pallet for a dedicated trip. Smaller counts often ride an existing lane, so tell us how flexible your dates are.
06How do I get paid?
On collection for regular sellers, on receipt-and-count for first-time sellers. A purchase record with counts and grades is issued either way.
07Do you take totes with residue?
Ordinary heels are normal and we are set up for them. Regulated or hazardous residue must be declared before dispatch so the compliant route is arranged in advance.
08Will you clear a whole facility?
Regularly. Plant closures and line changes are a large part of what we do, including mixed loads of totes, drums, cages and loose fittings.
Section 03

Food, water and safety

01Are used IBC totes safe for drinking water?
Only documented single-trip food-grade containers with a food-safe bottle and a non-wood pallet. Never assume a general industrial tote is safe for potable use, however clean it looks.
02Can an industrial tote be cleaned to food grade?
No. HDPE absorbs some chemistry into the polymer wall where no wash reaches, and the documentation trail cannot be created retroactively.
03Does a clear bottle mean food grade?
No. Natural translucent HDPE is used for industrial cargo constantly. Colour tells you about UV stabilisation, not about prior contents.
04Why does the pallet matter for food?
Wood absorbs moisture and product, harbours organisms and cannot be reliably sanitised. Food service requires a plastic or all-steel base.
05What should I do before a first food fill?
Rinse with potable water, wash with food-safe detergent, rinse twice, sanitise at label concentration, air dry with the cap off, and replace the outlet gasket.
06Can I use a tote for livestock water?
Generally yes with documented food-grade or potable-history stock, subject to local rules. Do not use industrial-history containers.
07Is rainwater collected in a tote drinkable?
No, not without a proper treatment system. It is excellent for irrigation, washing and topping up ponds.
Section 04

Cleaning and maintenance

01How do I clean an IBC tote?
Evacuate the heel, triple rinse with a rotating spray head, wash with detergent or warm caustic allowing genuine dwell time, rinse twice more, sanitise if food service, then dry with the cap off and replace the outlet gasket.
02How do I get rid of a smell?
Odour lives in the polymer. Warm caustic followed by steam lifts most of it. If two full cycles leave the smell, the bottle is finished for reuse.
03Is staining a problem?
No. Dyes and iron colour HDPE permanently without affecting it. Grade on odour, film and pressure, not on appearance.
04Why is my tote leaking at the valve?
Almost always a hardened or chemically swollen gasket, not a container fault. Replace the gasket with the correct elastomer for your fluid.
05Which gasket material do I need?
EPDM for water, alkalis and glycols. Viton for hydrocarbons, oils and aromatics. Silicone for food and heat. PTFE-lined when the chemistry is aggressive or unknown.
06Why is my bottle collapsing inward?
A solid cap where a vented one is needed. Warm contents cool, the vapour contracts and atmospheric pressure does the rest. Fit a vented cap.
07Can I repair a cracked bottle?
Not reliably, and not for anything that matters. Rebottle the container instead — the cage is the valuable part and it is unaffected.
Section 05

Sizes, specs and compliance

01What are the dimensions of a 275 gallon tote?
About 48 inches long, 40 wide and 46 tall, on a GMA pallet footprint. Tare around 145 pounds, gross rating typically 2,500 pounds.
02What are the dimensions of a 330 gallon tote?
Same 48 by 40 footprint, about 53 inches tall. Tare around 165 pounds, gross rating typically 3,000 pounds.
03How much does a full tote weigh?
Gallons times fluid density plus tare. A 275 of water is about 2,435 pounds. Dense fluids reach the gross rating before the container is full.
04Can totes be stacked?
Empty, two or three high. Full, only where the design permits and only two high, on level ground with aligned frames.
05What does 31HA1 mean?
A UN design-type code: 31 for a liquid IBC, HA1 for a composite container with a rigid plastic inner and outer metal frame.
06What does the Y in the marking mean?
The packing group letter. Y approves the design for packing groups II and III — medium and low danger.
07How often must a rated IBC be tested?
Generally a leakproofness test and external inspection at intervals not exceeding 2.5 years, and a full periodic inspection at intervals not exceeding 5 years. Verify against the regulation applying to you.
08What if the UN plate is unreadable?
The container cannot be recertified for regulated service. It can still be used for non-regulated cargo or reclaimed.
Section 06

Freight, sustainability and working with us

01How many totes fit on a truck?
Forty-five to fifty-two floor loaded on a 53-foot van, up to eighty double stacked when empty. Full totes hit a weight limit at fifteen to twenty units.
02Why is freight sometimes more than the totes?
An empty tote is mostly air. Below about twenty units freight per container is punishing; above forty it flattens out. Consolidating onto an existing lane is the usual fix.
03Where do you deliver?
Our own trucks cover Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky and West Virginia. Contract freight covers the rest of the United States, quoted delivered.
04How much carbon does reuse actually save?
About 187 pounds of CO2e per 275 gallon container reused rather than replaced, plus 42 pounds of virgin HDPE, 88 pounds of steel and 1.9 cubic yards of landfill airspace.
05Do you provide sustainability documentation?
Yes — diversion statements showing units and tonnage split by reuse, rebottling, repair and material reclaim. Ask for the component-level worksheet if you are reporting externally.
06Why is there no phone number?
Because counts, prior contents, grades and freight terms belong in writing. Everything runs through email and the forms on this site, which has made us faster and eliminated a whole category of misunderstanding.
07Where are you located?
4750 W 160th St, Cleveland, OH 44135. Open Monday to Thursday 7:00 to 17:00 and Friday 7:00 to 15:00, US Eastern. Visits and customer pickups by appointment.
08How quickly do you reply?
Usually within one business day and often the same morning. Friday afternoon enquiries are typically answered Monday.
